On November 12, 1977 at 12:54am, officers were dispatched to the front of 711 W 6th St. regarding a complaint of an accident. Officers observed a 1968 white over maroon Pontiac GTO. The ignition was in the off position. A black male occupant was in the driver's seat and slumped to the right of the wheel. It also appeared that someone had occupied the rear seat of the vehicle.
The occupant was pronounced dead at the scene from wounds received from an unknown assailant. A wallet located in the vehicle identified the victim as Johnny Van. The vehicle was removed from the scene and processed for evidence. Several subjects were interviewed during an extensive investigation. However, no criminal charges were filed.

On August 25, 1978 at 6:30am, officers were dispatched to LUMS Restaurant regarding an initial complaint of a disturbance. Upon responding, officers spoke with the janitor. The Janitor advised persons were inside of the restaurant and injured. Officers discovered two men inside the kitchen area of the restaurant.
The suspect was described as a Black male with short neatly trimmed hair, and a small mustache. He had a stocky build and was wearing a gold colored hooded sweatshirt. The suspect may have used a blue Pontiac Firebird for transportation.
One of the victims was identified as the Assistant Manger of LUMS. The other victim was identified as John Stitch, age 20, a friend of the assistant manager. Both men were critically injured. However, John Stitch died of the injuries he sustained. Initial investigation indicated that both subjects were victims of a robbery that occurred in the early morning hours as the restaurant was closing.
Several persons were interviewed during an extensive investigation, however, no criminal charges, were filed. The case remains open. |

On April 18, 1988 at approximately 2:00am, a Long Beach Officer saw flames flickering from a residence at 3614 Wild Rose Dr. The fire claimed the lives of John Layne, age 33, and his infant son, Justin. His wife, Sandra Layne, was outside of the residence when the police arrived. She stated that the family had attended a birthday party earlier, but came home due to her son's unruly behavior. Sandra then returned to the party alone. Sandra discovered the house in flames when she returned home at 2:00 am.
Evidence gathered at the scene indicated that the fire was set intentionally.
Several subjects were interviewed during an extensive investigation but no criminal charges were filed. The case remains open.

On February 4, 1990, in the early morning hours, James Paul Peterson left the area of the 200 block of Willard Ave. He was last seen entering a light colored station wagon. At 7:45am, officers were dispatched to the area of White Oak St. regarding a report of the body of a black male lying near the roadway in the middle of the block. Further investigation revealed that the victim suffered several gunshot wounds, and had died as a result of those injuries.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old James Paul Peterson. A canvas of the neighborhood revealed citizens recalled hearing gunshots at approximately 5:45am on this date. A light colored station wagon was also seen fleeing the area.
Several subjects were interviewed after an extensive investigation. However, no criminal charges were filed.

On September 6, 1992, at 6:15am, officers responded to Friendship Gardens regarding a report of a woman down. Responding officers discovered the body of a nude female lying on the ground. Her hands were by her side, and it appeared she was in shock. Officers also noted that the victim had suffered numerous injuries and was bleeding profusely. The victim was transported to St. Anthony's Hospital for emergency medical treatment. The victim died as a direct result of her injuries.
The victim was identified as Latanya Kyles, age 23, of 515 E. 8th St. Latanya was last seen at 4:00am leaving the B&W Tavern (223 Willard Ave., Michigan City, IN). She was with an unidentified black male described as having a small build and medium complexion. Both subjects entered an older model mid-sized bluish/silver vehicle.
Several subjects were interviewed after an extensive investigation. However, no criminal charges were filed.

On March 22, 1995 at 3:25pm, officers were dispatched to 402 E. 7th St. Apartment 1 regarding a deceased subject. Upon arrival, officers observed a white male victim lying on the floor of the apartment. They also noticed a large pool of blood in various stages of drying. Detectives arrived on the scene and processed it for evidence. The victim was identified as Norman C. Doran Jr.. He was the sole occupant of the apartment.
Norman was last seen in front of his apartment during the early morning hours of March 22.
Evidence collected at the scene indicates that he was the victim of a robbery.
Several subjects were interviewed during an extensive investigation. However no criminal charges were filed.

On Sunday, April 1st, 2007, at approx. 9:30 pm, officers of the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of East Fulton, regarding a complaint of shots fired in the area. Upon officers arrival, the victim, Robert Winter,
was found laying face down in the yard of 1316 Lafayette St, which is his resident. Robert had sustained multiple gun shot wounds by a handgun and was pronounced dead upon arrival by Emergency Medical Services. Possible suspect(s) were seen fleeing from the area.
It is believed that Robert was approached by his assailant(s) while walking from his vehicle to the back of his resident.
